Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  

* Main purpose of job:
The overall purpose of this role is to carry out all maintenance works on the Embassy’s premises, as well as appropriate maintenance work on properties located outside these facilities, under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager. The jobholder will also be expected to contribute to the wider Corporate Services Team objectives.

* Roles and responsibilities 
In your role as Maintenance Worker, you will be responsible for the following areas of work:

1. Estates Maintenance

a) Carrying out all routine and ad hoc maintenance (eg. Air Conditioning units, gates and turnstiles, water tanks), repairs and minor works (building, plumbing, electrical etc.) undertaken in the properties to ensure that they are delivered to the FCDO standards and as per the timelines published in the Corporate Services Charter.

b) Completing properties inspections and reporting the finding to the Deputy Estates and Maintenance Manager.

c) Familiarising and applying best practice on the FCDO Health and Safety standards in using and maintaining hand tools and basic light machinery.

d) Ensuring that all tools are kept clean, tidy and securely stored as per the FCDO Health and Safety standards. As well as reporting any faulty appliances, damaged equipment or any potential hazards to the line manager.

e) Supervising contractors working on site

2. Other administration support

a) Carrying out minor procurement of goods/services, in accordance with FCDO policies, and with a particular focus on ensuring and providing value for money.

b) Assisting with the assets and stocks inventory 

c) Updating the Estates Tracker on work progress.

d) Government Procurement Card Holder.

e) General support to the Estates Team and additional administrative duties.

You will also need to be flexible to assist with specific, discrete areas of work when required (for example, supporting the Embassy in the event of a crisis, or with planning for important visitors, etc.).

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

  • Professional/technical qualification from a reputable college or technical training provider
  • Experience in maintenance and/or building services related disciplines (electrical, mechanical, plumbing and air conditioning)
  • Knowledge of relevant technical EU/UK standards and related Health and Safety legislation
  • An ability to be proactive and managing your own workload well
  • A flexible approach to your work in general, with experience of adapting quickly to changing priorities.
  • A working knowledge of all Microsoft Office suite of programmes (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Driving (valid license) as officer will be required to visit different sites

  • Learning and development will be discussed with the successful applicant upon appointment.

Working patterns: 

The standard working schedule is 5 days per week, Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 16:00 and on Fridays, 08:00 to 14:00.   

Regular attendance at the office and visits to residential properties is required as part of this role.  We will try to be as accommodating as possible, but the nature of this role means that some flexible working patterns cannot be accommodated.  This role will also require some ad-hoc out of hours working when necessary.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
